Maruti Suzuki Swift Look

The 2018 Maruti Swift is not a facelift but an all new car. It is based on the same platform which underpins the Ignis and Dzire. This new platform comes with a host of good things. It makes the car lighter, yet stronger. Bigger, yet compact. To put it in simple words, the Swift is now a much more desirable car that before. Though the design philosophy has been maintained, it gets some nice touches. The front is new and gets new headlamps with projectors and daytime running LEDs.

 

The grille is all new single aperture design. Now, this is different from the Dzire, which gets a chrome lip on the grille. The Swift gets an all black one. The side looks similar to the earlier model, but the floating roof concept is enhanced, as it gets a black band across the rear side end. The rear door is also different and has a handle with is embedded next to the C-pillar. The Swift gets 15-inch alloy wheels. These are silver painted ones and the top end trims get a black machined or diamond cut finish on the wheels. The width of the car is now increased by 40mm, hence it looks broader and is more spacious as well. The wheelbase is also longer.

The rear is the portion which gets the biggest change. Here the car looks completely different from its previous generation one. It gets a jetting out set of taillamps. These are LED ones and look very attractive. Now the rear end is a matter of choice to like or dislike. Frankly, we were not too impressed with the way it appears. The bumper is also all new.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Comfort

The Swift gets an all-black cabin with deep grey inserts on the dashboard and the steering wheel. While the cabin does look sporty and better put together than before, it’s still very much like other Maruti Suzuki cars in terms of the plastic quality and materials used. An important thing to mention here is that the dashboard design now is not a carbon copy of the Dzire. The aircon vents in the middle, for example, are circular in shape in the Swift while they’re trapezoidal in the Dzire. The aircon knobs of the Swift are also circular and different from the ones on its compact sedan sibling. These are also more premium-looking and can be operated without taking eyes off the road. Overall, even though the Swift shares a lot of interior components with the Dzire, it’s now unique in its own ways.

The front seats are very supportive and are cushioned at the right places — around the back, shoulders and the lumbar. The driver’s seat is adjustable for height but the steering is only adjustable for rake. A telescopic steering would have been a welcome addition, especially since taller drivers can take the liberty to stretch their legs further, thanks to more leg space at the front compared to the outgoing model. The view out from the front seat is excellent with the upright A-pillar not hindering side vision at all. Turning the Swift or parking it front-first will be easy for most drivers.

Lack of knee room at the rear was one of the shortcomings of the previous generation Swift and that has been addressed in the new version. Thanks to the new Heartect platform, there’s more space inside the cabin as the wheelbase has improved by 20mm. It is now possible for two adults, at least 5’8”, to sit one behind the other without compromising on rear knee room. The boot space has also improved by 58 litres although the loading lip is inconveniently high.

The engines are the same as earlier. The petrol is a 1.2-litre K series engines with 84 bhp of power. The diesel is also the same 1.3-litre fiat sourced DDis unit. It belts out 75bhp of power. Both engines are mighty quick and do not go on the power figures alone. The new Swift is much lighter, hence the performance is even better now. There is a new addition of an AMT. The AMT is available in both diesel and petrol, however comes only in the Z variant. The top Z+ does not get an AMT in either fuel versions.

Performance is one thing, but when coupled with refinement, it takes the car to a different level. The Swift feels excellent to drive.  was particularly impressed by the way it handles. This hatchback is very nimble and the steering response is better than any recent car from Maruti. I drove up some hard twisties in Lonavala and the way this car handled curves at reasonably high speeds, was fabulous. This is not exaggeration at all! I have been criticizing the steering response of Maruti cars, but this new Swift is excellent. It brings out the driver in you.

The silent cabin is also mighty impressive as Maruti has done a lot of work on the NVH levels. By using additional sealants and sound deadening materials, the result is a cabin that feels premium. The steering wheel also adds to the driving pleasure as the top variants get a leather wrap around and feels great to hold. The steering wheel is small and the flat bottom makes it feel extremely sporty.The only downside is that the suspension feels a bit stiff at low speeds. But it feels fine at higher speeds and also keeps the composure of the car in check.

This is a fuel efficient car. The petrol manual should return around 13-14 km/l in the city 16-17 km/l on the highway. The AMT will be around 11-12 km/l in city and 15-16 km/l on the highway.The diesel manual will return 14-15 km/l in the city and 22-23 km/l on the highway. The AMT will return 13-14 km/l in city and 20-22 km/l on the highway. These are in real driving conditions.

The Swift has enjoyed segment best driving dynamics, both in its first and second generations. We are happy to say that even with the 3rd generation, the Swift hasn’t lost its soul and still manages to put a smile on your face once you get behind the wheel. The all new Swift is lighter in weight by nearly 40 kgs and courtesy of the new HEARTECT platform, the body structure is more rigid due to use of high and ultra-high tensile steel. This has managed to improve driving dynamics by quite a margin. The diesel Swift’s steering offers terrific feedback at both low and high speeds and is well-centred. This car loves to be pushed around corners and performs beautifully around the twisties. The steering weighs up well at high speeds and is very predictable.

Even sudden changes in direction don’t unsettle the car. The tyres offer tons of grip and tend to understeer on extremely hard cornering, something which the end customer will seldom do. The all new Swift surprised us with the ride quality. The suspension has been tuned towards the stiffer side but Maruti has managed to strike the balance quite well. To elaborate, the suspension manages to filter the undulations without passing them onto the cabin. Even though it is stiffer than before, it doesn’t get choppy on bad roads. The rear tends to get bouncy on bad roads but overall there is a vast improvement from the previous generation car. However, the petrol-powered Swift does not have the same steering feel as in the diesel and feels less enthusiastic in terms of cornering abilities mainly because it is lighter than its diesel counterpart. Ride quality is not all that great definitely not as good as the diesel’s.

The new Swift will be available in 4 variants – L, V, Z, and Z+. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, front seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters, and Isofix child seat anchors are standard across the variant lineup. AMT will be available in the V and Z variants only. The top Z+ variant of the Swift gets the following features:The 2018 Swift gets dual airbags, ABS and ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard across the range. The Standard and Safety pack variants of the Swift (both with six airbags) scored 3 and 4 stars respectively in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
