Honda BR V Overview

The new Honda BR-V is many things. You could call it yet another city SUV in a segment that has the hot selling Hyundai Creta and the recently updated Renault Duster. You could call it a meaner, more desirable version of the Honda Mobilio. Or, you could even think of it as the most sensible buy in the up to Rs 10 lakh price brand, for it has three rows of seating. But, how is it as a product? A day in Rajasthan did present us with some answers.\

The Honda BR-V looks good, but there are too many things that make it look too similar to the Mobilio MUV. This is not the case with any of the other cars based on the Brio platform – the Amaze and the Mobilio have their own identities. The BR-V on the other hand, at first glance at least, looks like a Mobilio which has been given a facelift and given some new accessories. Honda signature wing-like chrome grille, aggressive front bumper with a silver faux skid-plate and clam-shell bonnet. The side profile with the black lower-cladding, large 16-inch aggressive looking 5-spoke alloy wheels, large doors, stretched windows with a generously large rear quarter-glass, and the roof-rails is well proportioned. The chrome handles and the chrome strips at the bottom of the doors look quite nice for a change. Many other companies can learn a thing or two from the BR-V in this matter. Move to the rear and you get to see the other important sector where designers from the company spent a lot of time. The new tail-lamps which stretch from side-to-side (the centre part consists of reflectors only, though) makes the BR-V look wider.

However, the BR-V is not an SUV, and is at best a crossover. It does sit higher than the Mobilio though, with a ground clearance of more than 210mm the BR-V is at par with the Renault Duster AWD.

We are in the top of the line VX trim. And it certainly feels better than the Mobilio here. But, it can’t match the Creta for opulence, quality or the feel good factor. The BR-V’s insides are ergonomically sound too. The driving position is more car like than SUV, and therefore feels natural and comfortable. The steering, the gear shifter, and the pedal positioning feels absolutely right. Even the controls – stalks for light and wipers, buttons for climate control and stereo, and the accessibility to the various cup and bottle holders and stowage spaces is easy to get used to.

Space, of course, is a big plus. The BR-V isn’t as wide as the Duster or the Creta, so shoulder room isn’t exactly impressive. And three adults in the second row is a squeeze. But, in terms of head room and making one believe that they are in a spacious car, the Honda BR-V does really well. Managing kneeroom for all three rows of occupants is what the BR-V excels at thanks to a sliding second row. And if you are going to be using the BR-V for weekend getaways, the boot space works out fine too, even with the last row in place. Plus it has comfortable seats and all of them recline. Feature wise, the Honda BR-V struggles to match up to the Hyundai Creta. It gets keyless entry and go, a multifunctional steering wheel, single zone climate control with rear aircon vents and a trip computer as well. Plus, the BR-V gets front dual airbags as standard across all variants. But, unlike the Creta, you can’t have the BR-V with six airbags, or a touchscreen multimedia system with internal memory and satnav, or (and this is a big miss) parking sensors; forget a reversing camera.

Honda BR V Gearbox

The diesel SUV gets the 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine from the City. The unit is quiet at idling, but gets noisy post 2,000rpm and stays that way to its 4,000rpm redline. But, according to Honda, the NVH has improved compared to the Mobilio. And one can tell both at idle and when driving. The engine makes 99bhp of max power and 200Nm of peak torque. In the real world this means good pulling power even from lower revs. Only catch is to avoid slipping under 1500rpm to avoid the lag. The petrol BR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC mill that belts out 118bhp of power and 145Nm of torque. This comes mated to a six-speed manual as well. But, additionally, there’s the option of an automatic, a CVT to be precise. This one too uses a front-wheel-drive layout. The petrol is quieter and more refined compared to the diesel. It revs well too and is best enjoyed when given the stick.

The Honda BR-V, for all its SUV posturing, still doesn’t lend high seating. Which isn’t bad given it is more comfortable as a result and because the visibility, particularly over the hood, is good, it never feels difficult to drive or manoeuvre. It is easy to live within the city helped by a relatively tight 5.3m turning radius. The steering is light and responsive and it also weighs up nicely at speeds. The ride is sorted too. It is firm but is absorbent at speed and doesn’t thud too much over poor roads either. And it manages unseen speed bumps and undulations well too. Straight-line stability again is commendable and the BR-V feels confident and completely home handling the fast sweeping corners too. To top it all, the brakes have good bite and progression and there’s ABS in this top of the line VX version for added reassurance.

With ARAI claimed fuel efficiencies of 15.4kmpl for the petrol and 21.9kmpl for the diesel, the car boasts of the best-in-segment fuel economy. Pretty impressive on paper. The figures in real world conditions will be clear when we do a thorough road test soon. First impressions suggest- it won’t be a tough task.

We didn’t get too many corners, but from whatever little we did, we liked the quick and predictable steering response, the sure -footedness, and the reined in body roll. Something we did get a lot of, however, was undulating stretches, long and fast corners, and wayward motorcyclists. And in these conditions, the BR-V shone. It rides flat over undulations no matter what speed, feels planted and adjustable around fast bends, and brakes brilliantly with hardly a twitch when a motorcyclist turns into your path without looking.

The Honda BR-V is a great handler. Especially the petrol engine. Ride is not too supple and not too stiff and the steering offers right amount of feedback. Throw the BR-V petrol into a corner and you would come out at the other end gracefully. However, this car is in no way meant to do lap times. On the safety front, the BR-V gets ABS and dual front airbags as standard across all variants. This is a good move considering the car priced slightly higher.

Honda BR V Bottomline

Honda is a little late to the compact SUV party. But, the BR-V has its USPs, its pluses, which should have buyers consider it. Three rows of seating for one. Then you have efficient engines, utility, dynamics and a premium badge to sweeten the deal. However, do note, the BR-V cannot off-road, it doesn’t pack in as many features or exude the same aura of premiumness as the Creta. The decider now will be its pricing. The new XC60 has been conceived using the same design language as the XC90, the S90 and more recently, the V90. Naturally, it has the same basic design cues – clean, simple lines and striking details – as these other models. That said, the XC60 has a few distinctive bits.

The now familiar T-shaped daytime running lights in the headlamps, for instance, extend right to the edge of the front grille. The doors also have a heavily sculpted lower section, while the pronounced ridge that runs from above the rear door handle helps give the XC60 a broader stance. Also, the vertically stacked taillights seem to have been inspired by the old car, but they are significantly sharper looking and superbly detailed. While the interiors of the XC60 retains vestiges of the beauty of the XC90 and S90, its out-of-the-box design cues incorporate a sense of simplistic exquisiteness. Then there’s the large glass area and a huge panoramic sunroof which provides an airy experience that’s simply astounding. The black soft-touch dashboard here is elegantly highlighted by matte wood trim, and the nine-inch vertically positioned screen continues to allow access to most on-board functions (including the air-con). Our only gripe is that it gets the driver’s eyes off the road.

The front leather seats offer incredible support thanks to the sculpted contours and premium cushioning. While these cooled/heated seats can also be electrically adjusted for lateral, lumbar, and thigh support, there’s ample head and knee room here too. But it’s definitely the massage function and the heated steering that takes comfort to an all new level. The rear seats themselves are comfy overall with superior cushioning and contours. They have a great backrest angle, offer lots of headroom and adequate leg room too.

For the rear occupants, though, there’s only the heated seats option, and the bench itself could have come with better under-thigh support. Besides you’ll have watch out to prevent your head from bumping into the C-Pillar since the door enclosure is visibly narrow. Although seating a middle passenger is possible, they’d have to deal with the flat cushioning and a tall transmission tunnel. On the boot front, the space-saver spare wheel has been neatly tucked away under the storage area. This makes for a boot that’s large enough for a weekend trip that includes some suitcases and soft bags. But the smart bit are the buttons to electronically lower/heighten the rear of this SUV to aid luggage loading.

Being a Volvo means the inclusion of a number of safety functions. These include collision warning, distance alert, lane keeping aid, road sign information, driver alert control, automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and a 360 degree camera. Volvo XC60 Gearbox

Under the muscular hood of the XC90 rests Volvo’s 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel motor that makes a solid 235bhp and 480Nm of torque. Thanks to the class-leading output, the XC60 feels brisk from the word go. On part throttle, the car is quick to react both in the city and at higher speeds thanks to the flat torque spread and a quick 8-speed automatic. If anything, this engine behaves its best on part throttle wherein it can ride the wave of torque and allow the gearbox to upshift early. The midrange pull is particularly strong and even at the top-end, this motor remains composed. The overall refinement levels, in fact, are quite high with little in terms of engine and road noise entering the cabin at normal speeds.

The highlight of the XC60’s running gear is the electronically controlled air suspension with adaptive dampers. It not only constantly adapts to the road conditions but offers a whole lot more. For instance, it will keep the car at a constant height and level, irrespective of the passenger or luggage load. What’s more, when the engine is turned off, it will lower the car by 40mm for easy exit or entry. Finally, it will lower the car to its lowest setting at high speeds for better stability and increase the ground clearance by up to 40mm in Off-Road driving mode. Speaking of driving modes, the XC60 has five of them – Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road and Individual. Unsurprisingly, the Volvo feels the calmest in Eco, with its throttle response feeling mushy and the gearbox upshifting early. Switch to Dynamic and you get a steering that’s noticeably heavier and a gearbox that hangs onto lower gears and upshifts over 4,500rpm. That being said, we found the XC60 to be the most intuitive in Individual mode as it allows the driver to alter the steering, gearbox, brakes and the suspension separately to suit their mood.

With Eco, Comfort, Off Road, Dynamic and Individual modes to choose from, Eco is meant for the best possible efficiency. It also makes for easy driving since the upshifts are quicker and the engine runs smooth all the time. That said, Comfort offers a slightly better response for a bit more excitement behind the wheel. This brings us to the Dynamic mode that offers a more spirited driving experience as the transmission clings on to lower gears for instant response. Individual mode, on the other hand, is customisable, and allows the driver to mix and match the preset modes to alter the steering, powertrain, brake and suspension responses. We found ourselves driving in this mode to match our personal requirements.

On the suspension front, the all-new XC60 gets an air suspension setup for all wheels and the driving modes also have preset adjustments for the damping characteristics. Off-road mode can only be activated while doing speeds of up to 40kmph, and it gets the system to channel more torque to the rear wheels. Additionally, ground clearance is automatically increased to a maximum of 223mm. In Eco/Comfort mode the ride at low speeds is great and although you can hear the suspension working its way over harsh bumps, you never really feel them in the cabin. However, there is some up and down movement at higher speeds. But as soon as you shift into Dynamic mode, the ride gets noticeably flatter, and the XC60 drives with good stability at highway speeds.

Let’s talk about the steering now. The XC60’s steering is adequately quick off the centre, and also feels light in Eco and Comfort modes. It goes without saying that this makes driving in the city an easy affair. But having said that, although the steering gets slightly heavier in Dynamic mode, we found the steering response in Comfort mode more natural, and eventually stuck to that. Volvo also seems to have got it spot-on with the brakes since it is remarkably progressive with excellent feedback. On the whole, we thoroughly felt that the XC60 will do a great job in covering great distances in good comfort.

Tip #1: Get your petition in as soon as the window opens!

In past years, the H-1B season has been open for only a short period of time. In fact, due to the staggering numbers of petitions filed each year, the lottery window is typically only open for the first 5 business days after the USCIS begins filing petitions. For that reason, it’s ideal to submit as soon as the first business day in April 2019 rolls around. Procrastinating is not at all recommended.

Tip #2: Filing petitions with multiple employers may be an effective strategy.

It’s commonly known that USCIS will revoke or deny any duplicated petitions they receive that are filed by an employer for one individual. However, you are allowed to submit petitions for multiple employers and even work part-time. This can dramatically increase your chances of being selected. Additionally, you can transfer your employment once your petition has been improved.

Tip #3: Employers–Check if the foreign worker has been previously counted against the cap.

One way to circumvent the annual quota, as we previously mentioned, is to qualify for a cap exemption. If the foreign worker has not yet reached the 6-year limit or if they are working for a cap-exempt employer, chances are they could be exempt. The following is a list of petitions that will not be counted against the cap:

Tip #4: Provide adequate evidence showing the employer can pay the prevailing wage.

Tip #5: Double check all mailing addresses and sections that require a signature.

It’s easy to overlook a section or neglect to sign an important section. Be sure to double check all relevant fields for the proper information, including addresses and signatures. Tip #6: Part-time workers can also file an H-1B petition.

Tip #7: Don’t be misled into thinking that premium processing will increase your chances.

Just because you pay the premium processing fee does not mean your petition will automatically be selected. This feature only speeds up the decision regarding your I-129 petition. The USCIS announces the date that they will begin deciding petitions filed with premium processing each year.

It is important to note that using this feature will also not allow you to start any earlier than October 1st. Speak with your attorney to learn if premium processing is appropriate for your situation.

Tip #8: Your specialty occupation must be related to your degree.

The position on your H-1B petition must correspond to your degree. Even though it is occasionally possible to get an H-1B visa when you have a degree in a different field, it is almost always advisable to seek a position that correlates to your educational background. So if you are applying to be an engineer, your degree should not be in accounting. Make sense?

This is especially important, considering the fact that many of the H-1B Requests for Evidence (RFE) that we get involve a situation in which the beneficiary did not have a degree that was related to the specialty position. While this is not the end of the road, it does create an unnecessary obstacle in the H-1B visa process that could cost you your position in the lottery.

Tip #9: Processing costs must be paid to the USCIS by the employer.

It is very important that the H-1B filing fees are not paid by the beneficiary. If the USCIS finds out the employer did not pay their responsible fees there are serious consequences including potentially revoking the worker’s visa. However, there are some fees, such as the premium processing fee, that can be paid by either the employer or the beneficiary. For the premium processing fee to be paid by the beneficiary, the employer must prove that this was done for the beneficiary’s sake, not the employer’s.

Tip #10: Look for an H-1B cap-exempt job

The best way to increase your chances of selection are to become cap-exempt. This can be done either by already having been counted against the cap or by seeking a job with a cap-exempt employer. The rules for this type of employer are outlined in detail further on in this article, but here are the basic requirements. A cap-exempt employer is either:

A. An institution of higher education

B. A non-profit organization associated with an institution of higher education

C. A governmental research center

Cap-exempt petitions are not only free from the uncertainty of the lottery selection system, but also the associated time constraints. You do not need to file a cap-exempt petition during the narrow cap window and your employment start date is not relegated to October 1st of that year.

You may be tempted to try and get an H-1B with one of these employers to circumvent the cap and then switch to a cap-subject employer when you are in the U.S. However, you must always have a sponsoring employer and switching this sponsor requires filing another petition. If your new sponsor is subject to the cap, then your petition will be also and you will only be able to file during the lottery window.

Tip #11: Be careful as a business owner

If you are the owner of a business, you should tread lightly when petitioning for an H-1B visa. The regulations state that you cannot sponsor yourself under any circumstances, which means that sole proprietors are unable to obtain an H-1B through their business. Essentially, you must not be the person petitioning and there must be a valid employer-employee relationship between the beneficiary and the sponsor. Your sponsor will need to be an executive or board of directors that has power over your salary, your employment status, and your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. Only then can you get an H-1B through your business. Keep in mind that the USCIS may still heavily scrutinize your case because of the potential for fraud that comes with this avenue.

Tip #12: Have a qualified immigration attorney review all the paperwork.

One of the main mistakes that people make when they try to navigate the treacherous waters of immigration law is going it alone. Just like any big projects, you always want to have an expert by your side making sure that everything is going as planned and fighting for you should the need arise.
