Hyundai Xcent Overview

Hyundai is one of the few automobile manufacturers who take customer needs and aspirations very seriously. Launching cars with cutting edge fluidic design or garnishing them with top of the line features, they have managed to get the pulse of Indian market.

It is not only the premium segment which gets all the detailing and attention by Hyundai but also the entry level segment, which has seen many benchmarks. Going by their trend of awarding the Indian customers with the best in class features, Hyundai recently launched the Xcent which is a sedan based on the popular Grandi10 hatchback.

Hyundai Xcent will have a tough responsibility as it carries ahead the legacy set by Accent which was a fine sedan of its time. The new car targets a younger and vibrant clientele who are dynamic when it comes to making choices. It gets the same powertrain as seen in the Grandi10 hatchback. In this review, we shall find out if the new Xcent can take the benchmark further and challenge the stalwarts of Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.

Hyundai Xcent Look

Initial spy shots left a lot of people saying, “Oh god, why?”, but much like the Mahindra TUV300, this is a car that looks better in person than in pictures. Additionally, it’s now more distinctive, not only from its predecessor, but the Grand i10 as well.

The two-part grille is no more and is replaced by a plus-sized hexagonal unit, generously lined with chrome. It’s got a new front bumper too with a sleeker set of fog lamps, and, not to mention, daytime running LEDs. The side profile remains the same, save for the engine badge on the front fender that reads ‘1.2D’ instead of ‘CRDi’, highlighting the uprated engine size. Up top, the radio antenna is a shark-fin unit instead of the old antenna on the higher variants.

The rear end looks as if it were inspired by the Kia Rio. Some may even draw parallels with the Toyota Camry. Gone are the tiny old tail lamps and instead, you get a wider set of lights that occupy more real estate at the rear. The lights even get some internal detailing to make them look more distinctive. The boot-lid itself has been redesigned and sports a chunky chrome bar that connects the rear lamps. The bumper gets some aggressive contouring too, and while it will take a while for the new look to grow on many, the new Xcent does look more mature. Hyundai Xcent Style

Not much has changed on the inside of the 2017 Hyundai Xcent. The dash, the vents, the various buttons, and even the stowage spaces remain unchanged. It retains its large cooled glovebox too. The new Xcent uses the same large multifunctional steering as well with the only addition being a voice activation button. It is still only adjustable for rake, by the way. The seat fabric design is new, but otherwise in terms of cushioning, support and seating comfort, it is identical to the older car. So, it’s still reasonably comfortable to spend long hours in both front and back.

What’s significantly new though, is the infotainment system. Like on the Grand i10, the new system gets a wider touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter mirrors a few functions of your phone on the screen simplifying access to related apps on the move. The new system besides offering Bluetooth connectivity and various audio input options, also doubles up as a reversing camera screen. Earlier, the Xcent used an inside rear-view mirror integrated screen which was too small to offer a clear view.

Otherwise the feature list for this top of the line variant remains the same with single zone climate control, rear AC vents, rear parking sensors, electric ORVMs with fold function, a basic trip computer, and keyless entry and start.

Hyundai Xcent Performance

Hyundai Xcent comes in petrol and diesel engine trims and we chose the diesel version for our first drive review. It was expected that the Xcent too would generate similar figures but then the power has been increased by 1PS and the torque has been bumped up by 20Nm. The 1197cc 3 cylinder diesel engine generates 72Ps of power at 4,000rpm and a torque of 180Nm at 1,750 to 2,500rpm. Automatic transmission is optional only on the petrol variant.

Grandi10 had already impressed us with its amazing performance. Having a pre-conceived notion about the Xcent’s performance we began our drive. This pint 1197cc 3 cylinder engine felt better than that in Grandi10. It jumps to the power band with great ease and maintains high momentum too.

The vibrations levels in the Xcent are even lower than the Grand and the gear shifts too are very smooth. Unlike some other diesel engines, power delivery is very active even at lower engine speeds. It is not fair to compare it with the 1.5L iDTEC engine as both these engines have their own distinct character. The one on Xcent feels very nimble while that on Amaze feels very dominating.

In terms of handling, the Xcent does not disappoint. It manages to hold in tight corners without losing control. Even at high speeds on a straight line, it holds on to the road with great confidence. The driving dynamics of the Xcent is impressive. The length of the car has been increased but then that has not changed the way this one handles.The suspension offers a dampened ride and thus even on rough roads, the Xcent performs good.

Given that Hyundai hasn’t bothered with other mechanical changes on the new Xcent, the ride and handling remains almost the same as before. The ride is still plush at low speeds, and with decent visibility and maneuverability, the Xcent makes for an easy car to live within the city. But, the soft suspension setup doesn’t cope very well with the increase in speed.

The ride gets noisy, and the Xcent – its rear in particular, even without being loaded – does wallow more than we would like. Not that it feels unstable or loose, but it lacks the planted feel of some of its competitors. It’s the same story when it comes to handling bends. The Xcent doesn’t feel sharp or nicely balanced to take on switchbacks at speed – the mute steering doesn’t help here either – but it isn’t wayward or scary in any way. It’s just not very interesting to drive quickly.

Hyundai Xcent Safety

Hyundai now offers dual front airbags as standard across the Xcent’s variant range. The top three variants also get rear parking sensors, while the top two get a reversing camera with the feed relayed to the touchscreen infotainment system. However, while ABS was a standard offering, it’s now limited to the range-topping SX and SX (O) grade. At the least, ABS should have been optional for the lower variants.

The Xcent ticks all boxes for someone looking for a practical car. It gets class leading features along with a spacious cabin. Prices start from Rs.486516 and go all the way to Rs. 775855. The Xcent directly rivals Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. Honda Amaze is priced between Rs.534018 to Rs.791240 while the DZire is priced between Rs. 512306 to Rs.761679.

All the three brands hold a strong position in the Indian car industry. These three cars have their individual characteristics. Hyundai Xcent will appeal to the ones seeking a feature rich entry sedan. Also, since it comes from a brand like Hyundai, trust and confidence will be a package deal.

The compact sedan segment is a heated battlefield with India’s top selling car being a compact sedan. The demand is there and so are plenty of rivals, fighting in this space. Ford launched the second generation Figo with the compact sedan Aspire in 2015 and it has done decently for them, although it deserved better sales. There were a few things missing and the petrol engine was quite lacklustre, the American car maker has now resolved both of these and also reduced the price of the car, making it a great proposition. We drove both the petrol and diesel manuals in hot, dry and dusty Rajasthan to get a feel of the facelifted model.

The compact sedan segment generally has cars which look like more of a compromise. Good looks takes a back seat here. Thats not the cars with the Ford Figo Aspire, though. This one is a very good looking car. The Ford Figo Aspire is based on Ford’s Kinetic Design 2.0. The bonnet or boot are neither too long nor short. The front design is similar to other new Fords like the Fiesta and Mondeo. There is a prominent swag line that runs across the car. The glass area is small so the car looks larger. This also makes it look well balanced and not too tall. The boot design too is good with a chrome strip that is well proportionate. Its not too flashy not too thin. The car looks premium ever from the rear.

Ford Figo Aspire Comfort

Get into the car and you are greeted by the familiar two-tone black and beige dashboard. The major change on the inside is the addition of the 6.5-inch touchscreen with the Ford Sync 3 system on the top-of-the-line Titanium+ cars. The unit is seamless in operation, very responsive and offers a level of slickness similar to that of most smartphones. The interface is intuitive and easy to understand, the display goes bright enough for even drives across a desert and what enhances the experience manifold, is the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Even connectivity has been enhanced with an improved Bluetooth system and an extra USB slot (Titanium+ only). And if you look closely, the dials have been upgraded too. They now get a carbon fibre-like texture; much nicer than the plain looking earlier dials.

With its new rubberised screen control knobs and additional chrome, the cabin has been given a bit of a lift too. The piano black surfaces, carried over from the earlier car, add to the premium feel, there are no badly built bits and most of the plastic bits feel hard-wearing. Quality levels, however, are a step down from those seen in the Dzire, and what the Ford also lacks is that sense of space the Maruti cabin delivers.The Aspire’s cabin is as practical as ever, especially up front. The door pockets are very accommodating and are smartly designed to hold bottles of all sizes; the glovebox is massive and there’s even a nicely executed stowage area between the seats where you can keep all sorts of odds and ends.

Overall visibility from the driver’s seat is good. Even tall drivers can find a comfortable driving position quite easily, and the wide front seats provide good under-thigh and shoulder support as well. More importantly, the seats cushioning is just right.Legroom in the rear is good as well due to the Aspire’s long wheelbase (the longest in its class), and the seat, though not as good as some rivals, offers good support and a nicely reclined backrest. Ford Figo Aspire Gearbox

There are three engines to choose from in the Ford Figo Aspire. First is the 1.2-litre petrol that churns out 87bhp of power and 112Nm and comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. This engine is ideal for city driving, while for highway it is just fine if you want to cruise. The punch from the engine comes after 3000rpm and keep it above that if you want to extract the best performance.

The Ford Figo Aspire’s second engine is the 1.5-litre petrol. This engine comes only with a six-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission). Simply put, it is a high-end automatic transmission. This is quite a powerful engine and is fun to drive in a spirited fashion. It is very responsive and will satisfy those looking for extra performance with the convenience of an automatic.

The third engine is the 1.5-litre diesel that produces 98bhp of power and 215Nm of torque. This engine of the Ford Figo Aspire has been tuned for better performance, however, there is still some amount of turbo lag. This is the perfect engine be it city or highway driving. This is the best engine of the lot and we will recommend this for performance and even fuel efficiency.

The diesel is certainly our pick of lot and it has a good mid-range, at low rpms it struggles to pull. The sweet spot for this engine is between 2000-3500rpm. The diesel will return about 15-17km/l in city. The Ford Figo Aspire has good suspension set-up. At the rear it is softer than the front and so the rear has still decent ride. The handling of the Ford Figo Aspire is one of the best-in-class and even the electric power steering is light and easy to drive in city and even on the highway.

Where the Aspire also leads the class is in the areas of ride and handling. Ford’s beautifully tuned suspension handles bad roads extremely well with very few broken patches of road transferred through to the cabin. What’s more, the suspension is fairly silent while going over bad roads; only sharp and deep potholes are heard and felt inside the cabin. High-speed stability is also good. There is a bit of body roll and steering feel when you get into a corner, it isn’t great, but apart from that, the Aspire feels so on the ball. Even when you up the speed, it is easily the most entertaining car to drive in its class. Tight corners, long bends, poorly surfaced roads, the Ford can take whatever you throw at it. The electric power steering is light enough to make driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic not feel like a chore, and it is well weighted and feels nicely connected to the road in corners. The only fly in the ointment is that the ABS kicks in a little early, especially on bumpy sections. In general, the brakes are so sharp and beautifully set-up, they add considerably to the overall driving experience.

On the safety front, the Aspire facelift gets 6 airbags, ABS, EBD and reverse parking camera which shows the visuals on the 6.5-inch touchscreen. The Ford Aspire scored a good 3-stars in adult occupant and 2-stars in child occupant safety, as per Global NCAP tests. The company offers a 5-year/1,00,000 km (2-years which can be extended) warranty on the Aspire which is great for a compact sedan. In terms of service, Ford has a decent network and they are increasing it further. Ford spare parts now come at cheaper rates than before and the cost of service is the cheapest in the segment. Speaking numbers, cost of service for the diesel Aspire is Rs. 1574/-, 4609/-, 5442/- 4609/-, 4129/-, 6621/-, 4129/-, 4609/-, 5442/- and 4609/- for the first 10 years of service at an interval of 10,000 kms (the petrol is even cheaper).

With its new engines, upgraded equipment and more aggressive pricing, the new Aspire has a lot more to offer now. A proper step up from the one it replaces, this is a car that now feels like it is back in the game. The facelift makes it look fresh, the cabin is now nicely updated, its new gearboxes make it light and easy to drive, and with its new price, the Aspire now undercuts most of its rivals. The new petrol engine may feel a bit lethargic at low engine speeds, some rivals may feel larger inside and out, and others may be better equipped too. But, if you are looking for a car that’s practical as well as entertaining and enjoyable to drive, no other car in this class delivers a stronger performance. Make sure you drive the diesel before you sign on the dotted line; it sure does hit the spot.
