Honda City Overview
The City has been the king of the C-Segment sedan space in India since its launch in 1998. Every new generation launched has been an instant hit in our country. Same was the case with the current fourth generation City, which is also the first diesel powered City in India. However, recently the sedan started feeling some heat from the Maruti Ciaz because of its better value proposition. Now, Honda has introduced the City facelift with a long list of cosmetic and feature updates. We find out how drastic the new changes are. Honda City Look
The subtle changes made to the exterior design could easily be mistaken for a modified car thanks to the amount of aftermarket customisation options available for the City. The new grille shows off the prominent slab of chrome with a honeycomb design in black that sits just below it. There’s no doubt that the LED headlamps along with the LED DRLs and the redesigned bumper lend the new fascia with a sportier character.
In profile however, other than the new 16-inch diamond cut alloys (15-inch on V variant), and the reworked bumpers, there’s nothing that sets it apart from the earlier City. However, the rear portion of the Honda City 2017 highlights the new additions that include an edgier bumper with a honeycomb design, the LED tail lamps, and the boot-lid spoiler with an LED stop lamp.
Honda City Comfort
Honda’s new design language has a huge say in the interior designing of the car. The quality of fit and finish is high in every corner. The front section is the house of a 3-spoke steering wheel mounted with control buttons. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is called “DigiPad” and comes with AVN (audio video navigation). The top-end variant of the car gets 8-speaker audio system, which can be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth.
The Honda City’s interior is spacious, thanks to the 2,600 mm wheelbase. The legroom is ample even for taller passengers. Moreover, the boot space is big too and can accommodate of 510 litres of your cargo. The rear row gets a foldable armrest with cup holders. The ZX trim of Honda City gets rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Other features include an automatic climate control, electric ORVMs and push start/stop button. The addition of the electric sunroof makes the ride more enjoyable. But this is not it. The top variant also gets leather upholstery along with leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob.
Honda City Gearbox
Powering the City are the same 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. They haven’t done any tweaks to the engine. Yes, the diesel version gets better insulation to make the cabin quieter than before. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is a gem to drive, the silky smooth i-VTEC makes a whopping 119 PS of power with its naturally aspirated engine. The power delivery is linear initially that gets insane near the redline, which comes at 7000 RPM. The amount of adrenaline you get while redlining the VTEC is super satisfying.
Mated to the 1.5-litre petrol is a 5-speed manual and CVT automatic transmission. The manual gearbox is slick and fun to use while the CVT is good only for city usage and if you push it hard, it gets noisy. The CVT version comes with steering mounted paddle shifts that gives you better control. Honda claims 17.4 km/l of mileage for the petrol engine but you can get around 10-13 km/l in real world conditions. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC offers decent performance and good low end acceleration. You don’t feel that typical diesel lag. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and the best part about the oil burner is its fuel efficiency which is claimed to be 25.6 km/l and you can easily extract 18 km/l in mixed driving conditions.
Honda City Rideing
On the road, lesser road noises filter into the 2017 City’s cabin, and this adds to the overall cabin comfort. With a stiff suspension setup, sharp edges can be felt and heard in the cabin at low speeds, but it never gets to the point where the occupants feel rough. Pick up the momentum and the City tends to drive flat as the damping allows it to absorb most road imperfections quite well.
On the handling front, the light steering has an accurate feel to it and there’s enough feedback for one to know what is happening at the wheels. Though there’s a hint of roll, a notable composure is displayed even at higher speeds despite the seemingly thin tyres they come shod with. Likewise, throw the Honda City at a sharp bend, and one will appreciate the manner in which the intended line is maintained; the only shortfall being the tyres squealing for grip. Furthermore, though the brakes felt adequate in stopping the car, a bit more feedback would have been appreciated.
Honda City Safety
The Honda City gets a good bit of safety features across all the variants. Two airbags and ABS along with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) has been given as standard across all variants. However, the top end ZX trim gets as many as six airbags, which makes the car extremely safe and well in competition in the segment. Moreover, the car also offers child seat anchorage point and seat belt warning as a standard feature across all the variants.

Honda City Bottomline
The latest 2017 update to the Honda City brings along a host of new cosmetic, convenient and safety improvements that makes this sedan even more desirable to buy in its segment. The City now looks sharper, has a longer list of features and the additional airbags along with ISOFIX seats just makes it a safer car than before. Honda has listened to the feedback and worked on the insulation of the diesel version as well. There are no cost cuttings visible in the facelift and we definitely give this update of the Honda City a worthy thumbs up.
