Hyundai Eon Overview
Hyundai breached the entry-level segment which was long dominated by Maruti Suzuki. And this was possible with its state-of-the-art product Eon launched in 2011. This was the straightforward challenge to Maruti’s money-spinning model Alto and Eon countered it quite well with its style statement and upmarket interiors. Over the years, Hyundai Eon has been given several updates including the powerful 1.0L engine and the recent Sports Edition with lots of styling changes. Hyundai Eon Look
Hyundai Eon is targeted at the youth of country and the flowing futuristic looks inspired by the fluidic design language make the car look very stylish. The car does not look like anything like its competitors. Hyundai has designed the car smartly. With the visible lines on both sides of the car, and great detailing done to the grille and headlamps, it does look premium and expensive.
The long swept-back headlamps, neatly-designed fog lamp scoops on the bumper, cool-looking grille, creased bonnet and muscular body with design lines flowing right from the headlamps to the tail make the small car very unique in its segment, and surely make it very aggressive and premium. With an overall length of 3495 mm and width of 1500 mm, the Eon is pretty compact and the design lines with the expressive attention to detail make the vehicle look very nice. Hyundai sells the car in bright sizzling colours, like Pristine Blue, Maharaja Red, Sleep Silver and many others, with body-coloured bumpers, making the vehicle a good attraction on road. The quality of materials is not very good but not very bad either. Apart from the thin body it comes with, the quality of plastic and finishing is really good. Hyundai Eon is the best-looking entry-level hatchback by any means.
Eon does not offer alloy wheels, but Hyundai has fitted elegant full wheel covers complete with a wheel hub in the Eon. The wheelbase of Eon is 2380 mm, which provides good stability to the car. Eon is offered in two different sets of wheels according to the trim of the vehicle. The base- and mid-level variants – D Lite, D Lite Plus and Era, get 145/80 12-inch wheels, while the Magna, Magna Plus and Sportz variants get larger 13-inch 155/70 profile tyres. Eon comes with tubeless tyres, which increases the safety of the car. Steel rims are painted in black and covered with a 10-spoke Hyundai’s signature diamond cut type wheel cover. The wheels are connected to McPherson Strut with coil spring and torsion beam for more comfort. The anti-roll bar suspension adds more safety to the Eon.

Get inside and you will be greeted by one of the best designed interiors with the quality of the fit and finish matching it. The Eon gets the segment’s best looking dashboard (equalled by the recently launched Renault Kwid maybe) and it’s hard to believe in this segment. Hyundai has upheld its reputation of putting the best looking interiors with amazing build quality.The interiors get a black and beige layout. The dashboard is spread like the wings of a bird with a V shaped centre console.The instrument cluster features a large circular pod that houses the speedometer and a MID at the bottom, displaying the odometer, trip meter and shift indicator. There are two small circular pods on either side showing the fuel level and engine temperature gauges. Overall, the meters are easily readable and are designed neatly. The lack of a tachometer is easily felt and there is no option for the same even in the top variants.
The steering wheel is nicely designed with a V-shaped silver highlight in the middle and is of a good size, if not a tad bigger. The steering wheel also gets a first-in-segment tilt adjustment.The centre console houses the middle AC vents and a 2-DIN audio system and air conditioning controls below. The switches and knobs are of good size and quality.The glove box is wide and deep, offering lots of space for your needs. Both the front and rear seats offer amazing under thigh support especially in this segment. The front seats get integrated headrests that are positioned very efficiently and the cushioning is also good. At the rear, the space available is one of the best in the segment (not surprising considering that the Eon gets the same wheelbase as the Santro and i10).215 litres of boot space means you can travel with your luggage neatly tucked in the rear. The boot space is one of the biggest in the segment miles ahead of the Alto’s 177 liters and Nanos abysmal 80 liters. Only the newly released Renault Kwid beats the Eon as its boot space stands at 300 liters.
Hyundai Eon Gearbox
Hyundai has been studying AMT for a while now, however the Eon hasn’t just got it. The Eon will have a 800cc engine and a 1.0-litre engine too. But these will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission. From what we understand, these engines will be tuned for better performance and improved drivability too. The Hyundai Eon 2017 will not see any addition of new engines or gearboxes or any mechanical changes.
The 800cc engine produces 55bhp of power and 76Nm of torque. The 1.0-litre engine churns about 68bhp of power and 94Nm of peak torque. The petrol engine has some amounts of vibrations, which can be felt on the gear lever. These two options are available on the Hyundai Eon 2017.In terms of efficiency, the Hyundai Eon 2017 should have a mileage of 16 km/l for the 800cc engine. The Eon 1.0 should return about 14 km/l. This is Eon mileage for a mix of city and highway driving.
Hyundai Eon Riding
The old Eon wasn’t a handler and the new one is no different. The steering is light at low speeds but just doesn’t weigh up at high speeds and that really robs away confidence even at 80 km/hr. In fact, the steering is so numb at high speeds that there is almost no feedback felt by the driver, this is simply not the car to drive enthusiastically. The brakes are strong though but again, the car doesn’t maintain its line on hard braking and twitches a lot. Ride quality is good, the suspension is softly sprung which makes the Eon bob at high speeds, robbing away stability and bad bumps do unsettle passengers. For city speeds though, the Eon’s suspension is more than up for the task to insulate all that’s thrown at it.
Hyundai Eon Safety
Driver airbag is optional from D-Lite + onwards and is a standard provision on the top end variant while missing out on the entry level trim. Other safety features like central locking, keyless entry, front fog lamps, engine immobilizer, seat belts in front & rear and inside rear view mirror are offered on the hatchback.

Hyundai Eon Bottomline
That the Eon is the entry level hatch to buy is no question about. The interior and exterior styling makes this hatch look stylish and gives it a wide appeal. Because of how it is styled, you’re made to believe you are paying less for it. Interior space while not as good as the Tata Nano, is good enough for four passengers and the feature list for a hatch of its price is good. The engine isn’t as refined as the Alto K10 and neither is the performance as strong as its rival, but it’s good enough to get by and the fuel efficiency is good. Ride quality is one of the Eon’s strength and the handling is good as well. Hyundai has packaged the Eon brilliantly and its swanky appearance makes you believe that you’re buying not a budget hatch but a modern car and therein lies its appeal.
