Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift Review & Test Drive

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Overview

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was originally launched in 2014 and since then the Ciaz sedan has been a strong performer in its segment and has been the sales leader too, consistently beating the Honda City and previous Hyundai Verna. Recently though, the Honda City got a facelift and the new Hyundai Verna too was introduced. Even Toyota entered this segment in India with the Yaris sedan, making it critical for Maruti Suzuki to give the Ciaz an update. Finally, after weeks of speculation, the company has launched the 2018 Ciaz facelift and we drove it around Bengaluru to find out if the updates are going to be enough to keep the competition at bay or not.View offers on Maruti Cars from Maruti dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Look

The 2018 Ciaz gets new front and rear bumpers, a new front grille, new headlamp internals and LED light guides in the taillamps. Its 16-inch alloy wheels now have lesser number of spokes. The Ciaz facelift only gets a handful of exterior changes, but you will still be able to distinguish it from the older model. At the front, the new grille now meets the headlamps, so it doesn’t appear to be a part of the bumper anymore. That makes the 2018 Ciaz look wider than the pre-facelift model. For 2018, the headlamps now get LED DRLs, something that many of us wanted to see in the Ciaz. At the rear, the tail lamps get LED light guides as standard. So whether you see it from the front or the rear, you will be able to differentiate the new Ciaz from the older model.

Alpha variant of the new Ciaz which gets the LED headlamps and DRLs. The Sigma and the Delta variant, however, get the same headlamp internals as the one on the pre-facelift model; these continue to be powered by halogen projectors though. Since the headlamp design is the same, retrofitting the new headlamp units should be possible on the lower variants as well. Rejoice! The chrome strip that runs just over the front grille is also standard, so even the Sigma and Delta variants will look quite upmarket post the mod.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Comfort

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz interiors do not get much of a restyling; it is rather restricted to feature update. Maruti Suzuki has added Birch Blonde wood grain accents with a low gloss finish for a plusher look. On the feature front, it now gets a new 4.2-litre coloured MID unit, while the touchscreen infotainment system continues to serve audio, navigation and connectivity functions. Since the Ciaz has always had a comfortable and spacious cabin, there was very little for Maruti to fiddle with. But some of the smaller but almost insignificant issues, since these won’t impact the buying decision, could have been addressed with the facelift.

Things like a missing pull-strap on the rear armrest, inconsistency of backlighting on the instrument console and steering-mounted buttons, non-sliding and relatively small front armrest, no USB port for rear passengers and others are all minor add-ons but could have added significant value to the package. The 2018 Ciaz would still remain one of the top picks when it comes to backseat comfort but we would have liked some more under-thigh support on the rear bench.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Gearbox

This is the area, which has witnessed a transformation in the new Ciaz and the changes are quite nice. The old 1.4 litre petrol engine has been replaced by the new K15B 1.5 litre engine, which is not only more powerful but offer higher fuel-efficiency too. The previous engine was adequate at best for the Ciaz but always left one wanting for a bit more. With a power output of 103 hp and 138 Nm of torque the new engine resolves that issue and does a good job of moving the Ciaz with more ease now.For more info on Maruti Suzuki Ciaz visit orhdc.in

The engine is smooth and is happy to rev to about 6,000 rpm and offers linear acceleration. Achieving triple digit speeds is easier now and overtaking on the highway is also quicker. The other big addition is the SHVS technology across all variants. Unlike the previous system’s larger lead-acid battery, the new system gets a lead-acid and lithium-ion battery. The system not only provides assist during acceleration but also has brake energy recovery and start/ stop. As a result of this, the new Ciaz despite being heavier than the older one by about 30 kg offers higher fuel-efficiency of 21.56 kmpl (claimed).

Gearbox options include a five-speed manual with reworked ratios, especially the 2nd gear, which is shorter now to improve drivability. The unit works well and changes are smooth and the throws are quite short, which coupled with a light clutch makes driving very easy. The automatic option includes a four-speed torque-convertor, which is well-suited for urban environments but fails to hide its limitations of ratios on highways, past 120 kmph. That said, the unit works well in traffic, giving no reasons to complain. The good thing about the 4-speed AT is that it now comes with ESP and Hill-Hold Assist, which improves the safety quotient of the Ciaz along with front dual airbags and ABS.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Rideing

There is no change in terms of performance as far as the diesel version is concerned. As for the petrol version, it is hands down better than the previous 1.4-litre unit. The Ciaz’ ride and handling manners complement its drivetrain, so while it isn’t the most eager at taking the twisties, we don’t dislike it either. The ride quality is supple at both high and slow speeds and the Ciaz doesn’t do anything that will annoy passengers. The steering is light when driving slow and weighs up to inspire confidence as speeds increase. If you’re looking for a sedan for regular commutes and relaxed highway drives, the Ciaz gets a thumbs up.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Safety

Along with dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, the all-new Maruti Ciaz 2018 now comes with an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill Hold Function, while co-passenger seatbelt reminder, speed alert system and reverse parking sensors are offered across the range.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Roun Up

The new 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift is a better car in multiple areas, especially the engine and safety ones. The car, which has always been positioned as a comfortable, practical and elegant car now builds further on its strengths. However, the car isn’t short of drawbacks that have been discussed earlier in this article. This brings us to the price and this is where Maruti Suzuki claws back lost ground with a starting selling tag of Rs 8.19 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi with the top petrol AT and diesel variants costing Rs 10.97 lakh. For its price, the new Ciaz offers exceptional value-for-money and I won’t be surprised if the new Ciaz becomes the best-selling sedan in its segment in the months to come.
