Though the gear lever is ergonomic once you get used to it, many will not like the placement of the gear lever and the old style pull and twist handbrake.The centre console gets two AC vents, an unusual audio setup and HVAC controls below. The switches and knobs are of good size and quality. The glove box is deep but comes without a closing lid. The same thing happened with the Nissan Evalia, which later got one, but the Go comes open only. Other storage spaces include smaller cubby holes under the steering wheel (none of them are closed) and bottle holders on the front doors.

Coming to the seat setup, the Datsun gets a connected seat, which is almost bench type seats you get in old HM Ambassadors. You can’t seat another person as there is neither the space nor any seatbelt. Datsun has said that this space can be used for storage space which sort of defeats the purpose of having a ‘seat’ and not usable cubby holes.Though the seats are thin, they offer good support. Having the longest wheelbase in its segment (longer than some in a segment above too), the Go offers excellent space, especially in the rear. Three adults can travel in reasonable comfort in the rear, when compared to the constricted space of the competition.

Datsun GO Engine & Performance

The Datsun GO is powered by a 3 cylinder, DOHC 12V, 1.2 litre engine which is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and which generates 68 Ps of maximum power at 5000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm which is at par with the other hatches of its class. It will carry an engine which will be produced at the Chennai facility in India in alliance with Nissan.The engine has been tuned to deliver more power which in turn helps in easy overtaking both in city traffic and highways. The Datsun Go engine also has been tuned to deliver an impressive fuel efficiency at the same time and Datsun claims that the GO will return about 20.63 Kilometers to a liter but it will be interesting to find out whether this three cylinder engine runs out of breathe when pushed to the limit.

Now coming to the ride quality the Datsun Go has been provided with a Mcpherson struts at the front and Torsion beams at the rear which you will find in most of the other cars of its class, these suspension system handles Indian roads quite well however if the road condition turns worse some of the jerks and bits can be felt inside the cabin easily. The Go has been provided with an electric steering which specially comes in handy while driving within the city traffic, so is the 4.6 meters turning radius.

The speed-sensitive power steering system enables easy Datsun GO handling. Though the steering can be a bit heavy as compared to the Hyundai vehicles, there is no compromise on the convenience factor. The 13-inch tubeless tyres enhance the Datsun GO performance levels a great deal. The Macpherson struts for the front wheels make riding over the toughest roads quite easy. The new car targets a younger and vibrant clientele who are dynamic when it comes to making choices. It gets the same powertrain as seen in the Grandi10 hatchback. In this review, we shall find out if the new Xcent can take the benchmark further and challenge the stalwarts of Honda Amaze and Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.

Hyundai Xcent Look

Initial spy shots left a lot of people saying, “Oh god, why?”, but much like the Mahindra TUV300, this is a car that looks better in person than in pictures. Additionally, it’s now more distinctive, not only from its predecessor, but the Grand i10 as well.

The two-part grille is no more and is replaced by a plus-sized hexagonal unit, generously lined with chrome. It’s got a new front bumper too with a sleeker set of fog lamps, and, not to mention, daytime running LEDs. The side profile remains the same, save for the engine badge on the front fender that reads ‘1.2D’ instead of ‘CRDi’, highlighting the uprated engine size. Up top, the radio antenna is a shark-fin unit instead of the old antenna on the higher variants.

The rear end looks as if it were inspired by the Kia Rio. Some may even draw parallels with the Toyota Camry. Gone are the tiny old tail lamps and instead, you get a wider set of lights that occupy more real estate at the rear. The lights even get some internal detailing to make them look more distinctive. The boot-lid itself has been redesigned and sports a chunky chrome bar that connects the rear lamps. The bumper gets some aggressive contouring too, and while it will take a while for the new look to grow on many, the new Xcent does look more mature. Hyundai Xcent Style

Not much has changed on the inside of the 2017 Hyundai Xcent. The dash, the vents, the various buttons, and even the stowage spaces remain unchanged. It retains its large cooled glovebox too. The new Xcent uses the same large multifunctional steering as well with the only addition being a voice activation button. It is still only adjustable for rake, by the way. The seat fabric design is new, but otherwise in terms of cushioning, support and seating comfort, it is identical to the older car. So, it’s still reasonably comfortable to spend long hours in both front and back.

What’s significantly new though, is the infotainment system. Like on the Grand i10, the new system gets a wider touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter mirrors a few functions of your phone on the screen simplifying access to related apps on the move. The new system besides offering Bluetooth connectivity and various audio input options, also doubles up as a reversing camera screen. Earlier, the Xcent used an inside rear-view mirror integrated screen which was too small to offer a clear view.

Otherwise the feature list for this top of the line variant remains the same with single zone climate control, rear AC vents, rear parking sensors, electric ORVMs with fold function, a basic trip computer, and keyless entry and start.

Hyundai Xcent Performance

Hyundai Xcent comes in petrol and diesel engine trims and we chose the diesel version for our first drive review. It was expected that the Xcent too would generate similar figures but then the power has been increased by 1PS and the torque has been bumped up by 20Nm. The 1197cc 3 cylinder diesel engine generates 72Ps of power at 4,000rpm and a torque of 180Nm at 1,750 to 2,500rpm. Automatic transmission is optional only on the petrol variant.

Grandi10 had already impressed us with its amazing performance. Having a pre-conceived notion about the Xcent’s performance we began our drive. This pint 1197cc 3 cylinder engine felt better than that in Grandi10. It jumps to the power band with great ease and maintains high momentum too.

The vibrations levels in the Xcent are even lower than the Grand and the gear shifts too are very smooth. Unlike some other diesel engines, power delivery is very active even at lower engine speeds. It is not fair to compare it with the 1.5L iDTEC engine as both these engines have their own distinct character. The one on Xcent feels very nimble while that on Amaze feels very dominating.

In terms of handling, the Xcent does not disappoint. It manages to hold in tight corners without losing control. Even at high speeds on a straight line, it holds on to the road with great confidence. The driving dynamics of the Xcent is impressive. The length of the car has been increased but then that has not changed the way this one handles.The suspension offers a dampened ride and thus even on rough roads, the Xcent performs good.

Hyundai Xcent Riding

Given that Hyundai hasn’t bothered with other mechanical changes on the new Xcent, the ride and handling remains almost the same as before. The ride is still plush at low speeds, and with decent visibility and maneuverability, the Xcent makes for an easy car to live within the city. But, the soft suspension setup doesn’t cope very well with the increase in speed.

The ride gets noisy, and the Xcent – its rear in particular, even without being loaded – does wallow more than we would like. Not that it feels unstable or loose, but it lacks the planted feel of some of its competitors. It’s the same story when it comes to handling bends. The Xcent doesn’t feel sharp or nicely balanced to take on switchbacks at speed – the mute steering doesn’t help here either – but it isn’t wayward or scary in any way. It’s just not very interesting to drive quickly.

Hyundai now offers dual front airbags as standard across the Xcent’s variant range. The top three variants also get rear parking sensors, while the top two get a reversing camera with the feed relayed to the touchscreen infotainment system. However, while ABS was a standard offering, it’s now limited to the range-topping SX and SX (O) grade. At the least, ABS should have been optional for the lower variants.

The compact sedan segment is a heated battlefield with India’s top selling car being a compact sedan. The demand is there and so are plenty of rivals, fighting in this space. Ford launched the second generation Figo with the compact sedan Aspire in 2015 and it has done decently for them, although it deserved better sales. There were a few things missing and the petrol engine was quite lacklustre, the American car maker has now resolved both of these and also reduced the price of the car, making it a great proposition. We drove both the petrol and diesel manuals in hot, dry and dusty Rajasthan to get a feel of the facelifted model.

Ford Figo Aspire Look

The compact sedan segment generally has cars which look like more of a compromise. Good looks takes a back seat here. Thats not the cars with the Ford Figo Aspire, though. This one is a very good looking car. The Ford Figo Aspire is based on Ford’s Kinetic Design 2.0. The bonnet or boot are neither too long nor short. The front design is similar to other new Fords like the Fiesta and Mondeo. There is a prominent swag line that runs across the car. The glass area is small so the car looks larger. This also makes it look well balanced and not too tall. The boot design too is good with a chrome strip that is well proportionate. Its not too flashy not too thin. The car looks premium ever from the rear.

Get into the car and you are greeted by the familiar two-tone black and beige dashboard. The major change on the inside is the addition of the 6.5-inch touchscreen with the Ford Sync 3 system on the top-of-the-line Titanium+ cars. The unit is seamless in operation, very responsive and offers a level of slickness similar to that of most smartphones. The interface is intuitive and easy to understand, the display goes bright enough for even drives across a desert and what enhances the experience manifold, is the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The piano black surfaces, carried over from the earlier car, add to the premium feel, there are no badly built bits and most of the plastic bits feel hard-wearing. Quality levels, however, are a step down from those seen in the Dzire, and what the Ford also lacks is that sense of space the Maruti cabin delivers.The Aspire’s cabin is as practical as ever, especially up front. The door pockets are very accommodating and are smartly designed to hold bottles of all sizes; the glovebox is massive and there’s even a nicely executed stowage area between the seats where you can keep all sorts of odds and ends.

Overall visibility from the driver’s seat is good. Even tall drivers can find a comfortable driving position quite easily, and the wide front seats provide good under-thigh and shoulder support as well. More importantly, the seats cushioning is just right.Legroom in the rear is good as well due to the Aspire’s long wheelbase (the longest in its class), and the seat, though not as good as some rivals, offers good support and a nicely reclined backrest. There are three engines to choose from in the Ford Figo Aspire. First is the 1.2-litre petrol that churns out 87bhp of power and 112Nm and comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. This engine is ideal for city driving, while for highway it is just fine if you want to cruise. The punch from the engine comes after 3000rpm and keep it above that if you want to extract the best performance.

The Ford Figo Aspire’s second engine is the 1.5-litre petrol. This engine comes only with a six-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission). Simply put, it is a high-end automatic transmission. This is quite a powerful engine and is fun to drive in a spirited fashion. It is very responsive and will satisfy those looking for extra performance with the convenience of an automatic.

The third engine is the 1.5-litre diesel that produces 98bhp of power and 215Nm of torque. This engine of the Ford Figo Aspire has been tuned for better performance, however, there is still some amount of turbo lag. This is the perfect engine be it city or highway driving. This is the best engine of the lot and we will recommend this for performance and even fuel efficiency.

The diesel is certainly our pick of lot and it has a good mid-range, at low rpms it struggles to pull. The sweet spot for this engine is between 2000-3500rpm. The diesel will return about 15-17km/l in city. The Ford Figo Aspire has good suspension set-up. At the rear it is softer than the front and so the rear has still decent ride. The handling of the Ford Figo Aspire is one of the best-in-class and even the electric power steering is light and easy to drive in city and even on the highway.

Where the Aspire also leads the class is in the areas of ride and handling. Ford’s beautifully tuned suspension handles bad roads extremely well with very few broken patches of road transferred through to the cabin. What’s more, the suspension is fairly silent while going over bad roads; only sharp and deep potholes are heard and felt inside the cabin. High-speed stability is also good. There is a bit of body roll and steering feel when you get into a corner, it isn’t great, but apart from that, the Aspire feels so on the ball. Even when you up the speed, it is easily the most entertaining car to drive in its class. Tight corners, long bends, poorly surfaced roads, the Ford can take whatever you throw at it. The electric power steering is light enough to make driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic not feel like a chore, and it is well weighted and feels nicely connected to the road in corners. The only fly in the ointment is that the ABS kicks in a little early, especially on bumpy sections. In general, the brakes are so sharp and beautifully set-up, they add considerably to the overall driving experience.

On the safety front, the Aspire facelift gets 6 airbags, ABS, EBD and reverse parking camera which shows the visuals on the 6.5-inch touchscreen. The new Honda BR-V is many things. You could call it yet another city SUV in a segment that has the hot selling Hyundai Creta and the recently updated Renault Duster. You could call it a meaner, more desirable version of the Honda Mobilio. Or, you could even think of it as the most sensible buy in the up to Rs 10 lakh price brand, for it has three rows of seating. But, how is it as a product? A day in Rajasthan did present us with some answers.\

Honda BR V Look

The Honda BR-V looks good, but there are too many things that make it look too similar to the Mobilio MUV. This is not the case with any of the other cars based on the Brio platform – the Amaze and the Mobilio have their own identities. The BR-V on the other hand, at first glance at least, looks like a Mobilio which has been given a facelift and given some new accessories. Honda signature wing-like chrome grille, aggressive front bumper with a silver faux skid-plate and clam-shell bonnet. The side profile with the black lower-cladding, large 16-inch aggressive looking 5-spoke alloy wheels, large doors, stretched windows with a generously large rear quarter-glass, and the roof-rails is well proportioned. The chrome handles and the chrome strips at the bottom of the doors look quite nice for a change. Many other companies can learn a thing or two from the BR-V in this matter. Move to the rear and you get to see the other important sector where designers from the company spent a lot of time. The new tail-lamps which stretch from side-to-side (the centre part consists of reflectors only, though) makes the BR-V look wider.

However, the BR-V is not an SUV, and is at best a crossover. It does sit higher than the Mobilio though, with a ground clearance of more than 210mm the BR-V is at par with the Renault Duster AWD.

We are in the top of the line VX trim. And it certainly feels better than the Mobilio here. But, it can’t match the Creta for opulence, quality or the feel good factor. The BR-V’s insides are ergonomically sound too. The driving position is more car like than SUV, and therefore feels natural and comfortable. The steering, the gear shifter, and the pedal positioning feels absolutely right. Even the controls – stalks for light and wipers, buttons for climate control and stereo, and the accessibility to the various cup and bottle holders and stowage spaces is easy to get used to.

Space, of course, is a big plus. The BR-V isn’t as wide as the Duster or the Creta, so shoulder room isn’t exactly impressive. And three adults in the second row is a squeeze. But, in terms of head room and making one believe that they are in a spacious car, the Honda BR-V does really well. Managing kneeroom for all three rows of occupants is what the BR-V excels at thanks to a sliding second row. And if you are going to be using the BR-V for weekend getaways, the boot space works out fine too, even with the last row in place. Plus it has comfortable seats and all of them recline. It’s also easy to get into the last row courtesy the full tumble function for the second row of seats. The low ingress height helps too.

Feature wise, the Honda BR-V struggles to match up to the Hyundai Creta. It gets keyless entry and go, a multifunctional steering wheel, single zone climate control with rear aircon vents and a trip computer as well. Plus, the BR-V gets front dual airbags as standard across all variants. But, unlike the Creta, you can’t have the BR-V with six airbags, or a touchscreen multimedia system with internal memory and satnav, or (and this is a big miss) parking sensors; forget a reversing camera.

Honda BR V Gearbox

The diesel SUV gets the 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine from the City. The unit is quiet at idling, but gets noisy post 2,000rpm and stays that way to its 4,000rpm redline. But, according to Honda, the NVH has improved compared to the Mobilio. And one can tell both at idle and when driving. The engine makes 99bhp of max power and 200Nm of peak torque. In the real world this means good pulling power even from lower revs. Only catch is to avoid slipping under 1500rpm to avoid the lag. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox which is a little notchy but the light clutch makes easy work of driving in traffic. Check car loan interest calculator.

The petrol BR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC mill that belts out 118bhp of power and 145Nm of torque. This comes mated to a six-speed manual as well. But, additionally, there’s the option of an automatic, a CVT to be precise. This one too uses a front-wheel-drive layout. The petrol is quieter and more refined compared to the diesel. It revs well too and is best enjoyed when given the stick.

The Honda BR-V, for all its SUV posturing, still doesn’t lend high seating. Which isn’t bad given it is more comfortable as a result and because the visibility, particularly over the hood, is good, it never feels difficult to drive or manoeuvre. It is easy to live within the city helped by a relatively tight 5.3m turning radius. The steering is light and responsive and it also weighs up nicely at speeds. The ride is sorted too. It is firm but is absorbent at speed and doesn’t thud too much over poor roads either. And it manages unseen speed bumps and undulations well too. Straight-line stability again is commendable and the BR-V feels confident and completely home handling the fast sweeping corners too. To top it all, the brakes have good bite and progression and there’s ABS in this top of the line VX version for added reassurance.

With ARAI claimed fuel efficiencies of 15.4kmpl for the petrol and 21.9kmpl for the diesel, the car boasts of the best-in-segment fuel economy. Pretty impressive on paper. The figures in real world conditions will be clear when we do a thorough road test soon. First impressions suggest- it won’t be a tough task.

We didn’t get too many corners, but from whatever little we did, we liked the quick and predictable steering response, the sure -footedness, and the reined in body roll. Something we did get a lot of, however, was undulating stretches, long and fast corners, and wayward motorcyclists. And in these conditions, the BR-V shone. It rides flat over undulations no matter what speed, feels planted and adjustable around fast bends, and brakes brilliantly with hardly a twitch when a motorcyclist turns into your path without looking.

The Honda BR-V is a great handler. Especially the petrol engine. Ride is not too supple and not too stiff and the steering offers right amount of feedback. Throw the BR-V petrol into a corner and you would come out at the other end gracefully. However, this car is in no way meant to do lap times. On the safety front, the BR-V gets ABS and dual front airbags as standard across all variants. This is a good move considering the car priced slightly higher.

Honda is a little late to the compact SUV party. But, the BR-V has its USPs, its pluses, which should have buyers consider it. Three rows of seating for one.
