Datsun GO+ Overview

The last we heard from Datsun India was almost a year ago when it launched the facelift of the Go and Go+ and back then we saw a whole bunch of changes made to both the cars. Both the Go and Go+ received updates to the exterior like a new, larger hexagonal grille with fat chrome surrounds, while the new sweptback headlamps came with styling black highlights.

The front bumper too was all new and there were bold muscular lines, along with some sharp scooped out sections that housed the new LED daytime running lights. While that certainly made both the Datsun GO and GO+ look trendy, we were told back then that there was an automatic transmission in the making and we all presumed that it will be an Automated Manual Transmission, considering even the Renault Kwid has one. But surprise, surprise, Datsun India had a different strategy in mind.

In a segment that has seen a big rise in the sales of automatic cars recently, and of course, the AMT is the dominant transmission used in the entry-level hatchback segment. Datsun India too wanted to cash in on this very trend and that’s why for the first time in this segment, you’ll see the introduction of a CVT. Yes, both the GO and GO+ will come with a CVT and there’ll be a premium attached to the price too and that’s because it will only be available in the top two variants T and T (O) and so expect a hike of about ₹ 50,000 over the top end variant.

Datsun GO+ Style

n terms of looks, the Go+ leaves a nicer impression compared to its hatchback version with a better and balanced profile. Datsun has made sure the Go+ looks different and they have achieved the same by giving it a fresh approach rather than just slapping a boot on the compact tail door.The face has been retained with the pronounced radiator grille which forms the starting point of multiple lines flowing across thebody. Large three dimensional headlights along with a well sculpted bonnet give a larger feel. The lines around the grille are treated in chrome in order to make it feel rich.

Even the top end trim gets manually adjustable rear view mirrors. They aren’t body coloured hinting at various cost effective measures undertaken. Like the hatch, this one too gets 155/70 R13 tyres. The main change is however in the new silhouette which gets an extension to accommodate the last row of seat. Must say, it is impressive to see how smartly the additional length has been married to the existing shape. The interim pillars have been blackened. The rear quarter panel gets a nice elongated shape with an only flaw of absence of an opening for air circulation for the third row occupants. The sloping design makes it difficult to have one.

The rear is comparatively neat with extended shoulder lines give it a wider upper track. The rear glass area is small giving just about sufficient visibility to the driver while reversing the car. There is no variant badging on the tail door but just the model name, nice and simple.

Datsun GO+ Space

The Datsun Go+ features the same interior as you get on the Go. Practicality and no frills is the direction the Japanese automaker has taken for the Go+ with a very basic but well styled grey and black dashboard. The front and middle row of seats are quite comfortable and it is remarkable how much head room and shoulder room the Go+ has to offer. That said, the seats could have done with a little more padding on the back rest and on the head rests.

The main attraction for most will be the extra two seats that the car offers. Although the Go+ does have seven seats that adhere to the ARAI specification of what can be defined as a seat in India, the third row is inconvenient to get into and there is no way two fully grown adults could sit there comfortably unless of course they choose to sit sideways. These seats are best suited for children under the age of 10 or your family dog. Or of course, you could fold them flat and enjoy the above average storage space that the Go+ offers.

An aspect that the Go+ really struggles to keep up with everything else in its segment are features. For starters, the glove compartment doesn’t get a lid and the second and third row passengers do not even get an inertia reel seatbelt. What is more annoying though is the fact that the ORVMs cannot be adjusted from the cabin, a feature that should not have been skipped.There is a simple instrument cluster that houses just one large speedometer dial and an LCD screen that houses a digital tachometer, fuel gauge and trip computer.

The Go+ also comes with a basic entertainment package that offers the driver an auxiliary cable and a USB charging slot. That said, the Go+ does not feel cheap when it comes to things like the quality of the switchgear and plastics. In fact, even little things like the headlight and wiper stalks or the AC knobs feel solid and premium.

Datsun GO+ Gearbox

The Datsun GO+ MPV is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine. This is a 3-cylinder unit and it also powers the GO and Nissan Micra (in a higher state of tune). It churns out 68 PS of power at 5000 RPM and 104 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Datsun will not be offering any diesel engine with this MPV. The petrol engine is very peppy and power is always available on tap. The low-end and mid-range offer good power while delivery is decent at speeds above the ton too. At the top-end of the RPM spectrum we found the engine to be a bit strained but it still performed well. With three bulky people on board and a boot full of luggage, we did not face issues in gaining speed or overtaking other vehicles on the highway.

Since this is a 3-cylinder unit, the engine does make some noise and it becomes fairly audible inside the cabin once the RPM begins to rise. With all four windows closed, the GO+ offers decent NVH levels and the cabin is moderately silent but some noise from the outside world does creep in. The gear shift is not-so-smooth, say like the Honda Brio, but it slots well and there is no notchy feeling. Torque delivery is also good and linear and it contributed majorly while climbing ghats.

The Datsun GO+ has an ARAI-tested fuel efficiency of 20.6 km/l but in our day-to-day driving conditions, the MPV managed to give around 13 km/l in the city and around 17 km/l on the highway. Talking about braking, the GO+ does not get ABS but we did encounter a couple of emergency braking situations and the vehicle handled all that without much drama. Datsun GO+ Driving

Go+ offers a really pliant ride. Its suspension has been tuned to deal with the greater load at the rear, but seems quite pliant and absorbent overall. The light controls make it very easy to drive within the city and the small turning radius of 4.6 meters is like icing on the cake.The steering is light enough at low speeds, and weighs up when you hit the highway. Like other electronic units, this doesn’t feel too nervous or unsure at higher speeds.The MPV is not a corner carver and isn’t meant to be one either.

Body roll is quite evident during the drive. At higher speeds, the car feels wafty and, on uneven highways, becomes bouncy at the rear.We would recommend upsizing the tyres as the stocks ones are too puny for the GO+. Also, they are produced by an unknown Strada brand. Upgrading them to a 175 size from a reputable manufacturer is what we would suggest.

Datsun GO+ Safety

The car does not come with an ABS. Though, the brakes are well in place and do a good job, ABS has now become a standard, which has bolstered the road safety of cars in the modern generation. Standard security features have also been included that make this MPV a smart option in the first place.The standard brakes on the Datsun Go Plus do their job quite magnificently as far as reining the car is concerned. Even when used in emergency or under city usage, the car performed well beyond expectations as far as the braking system is concerned.

Datsun GO+ Summing Up

The GO+ MPV is a very ordinary looking MPV and from the looks of it we can certainly tell you that Datsun has adopted many interesting methods to cut the overall expense of this car. While most of the important parts were taken from their hatch GO including the engine the interiors too look pretty basic with the third row seats not promising much comfort either. So in this case the only thing that will attract the attention is price tag of the GO+ MPV. Datsun has taken many important measures to keep the overall pricing of the MPV low which also is a main USP of this MPV.

Datsun GO Overview

Datsun GO has received an update after a gap of four years. Changes to the hatchback have been made on the cosmetic front and it gets additional features that make it a better package altogether. In addition, the car maker has added new colour options to the carline. Styling changes have been made to the five-seat layout cabin; it now comes layered with a premium instrument cluster, sporty bolster cushioning and a host of other bits. Packed with the above changes, the Datsun GO price in India is pegged competitively.

Datsun GO Exteriors & Look

One glance at the car and you will know that the GO is a fairly large hatchback. Based on the same V-platform as the Micra, the GO is longer, yet marginally narrower than its Nissan sibling. The styling is contemporary. Hexagonal grilles are the flavor of the season, but the Datsun grille has enough flair to stand out in the crowd. The chrome garnish isn’t too flashy and gels very well with the honeycomb type mesh design of the grille. The angular styling cues are seen in the headlamps and the air-dams as well.The side profile has four prominent creases. The shoulder line originates from the headlamps. A buttress flows over the rear door handle and cuts into the taillights. A crease runs from the front wheel arch into the tailgate.

A crease at the lower part of the bodywork runs along the length of the doors and disappears into the rear wheel arch.While all these can make you perceive the design to be busy, it is not. The creases are subtle and are noticeable only when observed closely. The colour of choice also has a big part to play in this regard as the creases tend to disappear on a lighter shade. The 13-inch wheels with the 155/70 section tyres look a tad tiny for the Datsun GO.The tailgate looks smart and the buttresses we spoke of, look better from the hindquarter. Datsun GO Interior & Space

All that size of the Go translates to a spacious cabin. But of course you will have to overcome the cheapness you will feel as soon as you enter. Don’t get us wrong, the build quality and the way things are put together are on par with the segment but the Hyundai Eon feels Eons better, pun intended. Apart from that, things like the non-retractable rear seat belts, thin seats and uncovered glove box open up the question of how much cost-cutting went in the car.The interiors get a grey layout with a lighter shade of grey for the bottom of the dashboard. The over design of the dashboard is very simple and many things like the indicator stalks, AC vents etc are borrowed from Nissan Micra.A very simple instrument cluster comprises of a very large speedometer (no tachometer) and a MID. The MID offers a wide range of information like tachometer, odometer, tripmeter, distance to empty and average fuel economy.

Though simple, the steering wheel is of nice size and feels light. The horn pad is big but the horn itself is a poor sounding single unit. The gear lever and the handbrake find their place on the dashboard instead of the conventional in-between the seats one. Though the gear lever is ergonomic once you get used to it, many will not like the placement of the gear lever and the old style pull and twist handbrake.The centre console gets two AC vents, an unusual audio setup and HVAC controls below. The switches and knobs are of good size and quality. The glove box is deep but comes without a closing lid. The same thing happened with the Nissan Evalia, which later got one, but the Go comes open only. Other storage spaces include smaller cubby holes under the steering wheel (none of them are closed) and bottle holders on the front doors.

Coming to the seat setup, the Datsun gets a connected seat, which is almost bench type seats you get in old HM Ambassadors. You can’t seat another person as there is neither the space nor any seatbelt. Datsun has said that this space can be used for storage space which sort of defeats the purpose of having a ‘seat’ and not usable cubby holes.Though the seats are thin, they offer good support. Having the longest wheelbase in its segment (longer than some in a segment above too), the Go offers excellent space, especially in the rear. Three adults can travel in reasonable comfort in the rear, when compared to the constricted space of the competition.

Datsun GO Engine & Performance

The Datsun GO is powered by a 3 cylinder, DOHC 12V, 1.2 litre engine which is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and which generates 68 Ps of maximum power at 5000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm which is at par with the other hatches of its class. It will carry an engine which will be produced at the Chennai facility in India in alliance with Nissan.The engine has been tuned to deliver more power which in turn helps in easy overtaking both in city traffic and highways. The Datsun Go engine also has been tuned to deliver an impressive fuel efficiency at the same time and Datsun claims that the GO will return about 20.63 Kilometers to a liter but it will be interesting to find out whether this three cylinder engine runs out of breathe when pushed to the limit.

Now coming to the ride quality the Datsun Go has been provided with a Mcpherson struts at the front and Torsion beams at the rear which you will find in most of the other cars of its class, these suspension system handles Indian roads quite well however if the road condition turns worse some of the jerks and bits can be felt inside the cabin easily. The Go has been provided with an electric steering which specially comes in handy while driving within the city traffic, so is the 4.6 meters turning radius.

Datsun GO Driving Dynamics

The speed-sensitive power steering system enables easy Datsun GO handling. Though the steering can be a bit heavy as compared to the Hyundai vehicles, there is no compromise on the convenience factor. The 13-inch tubeless tyres enhance the Datsun GO performance levels a great deal. The Macpherson struts for the front wheels make riding over the toughest roads quite easy. The ground clearance is 170 mm thereby allowing it comfortable leeway whereas the turning radius of 4.6 metres makes the Datsun GO an easily manoeuvrable vehicle.

Datsun GO Braking & Safety

Safety is one of the main priorities of many Indian consumers especially when they are choosing a car for their entire family. For your information the Datsun GO will disappoint you once again here because quite frankly it lacks lot of safety features which you would normally expect out of your family hatch.The Go does not have any provision of a airbag in any of its variants. Although it has been provided with disc brakes at the front but there is no ABS option either in the car. So if you are concerned about all these safety measures then we are afraid that Datsun GO won’t provide you with any.

Datsun GO Bottomline

The Datsun GO 2018 facelift gets styling changes on the outside as well as inside. Datsun has also packed additional features such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, which is a segment-first feature. Overall, it is a better package than the pre-facelift version.
