The completely redesigned front and rear end treatment has enhanced the looks of the vehicle. The front grille is crisp and in sync with whatever was possible at the lowest of outlays and with a new bumper cum air dam plus newly designed headlamps, the dowdy look of the original has been banished.

The rear end also sports the same crisp theme and what is even more impressive, on initial early looks, is the fact that put-together quality seems to be of an even higher order. The shut lines are far more uniform and overall the taut body structure seems to have got the sheen it didn’t have as a high value, low cost proposition in the past. Overall the car is very sturdy and there seems to be no flexing of the structure which more often than not ends up in an orchestra of squeaks and rattles you never paid to hear!

Since this is an electric vehicle, there are many changes inside the cabin. This includes the large dial with a brushed aluminium ring surrounding it. There is also a small blue backlit digital unit that shows the mode you’ve selected for driving the car. Flanking it are the State of Charge (SOC) and the efficiency meters – both represented by simple bars. A single-din music system that supports AUX and CDs handles the infotainment part. It isn’t easily visible on the go as it is placed very low. The glovebox is fairly large and illuminated too. Sadly though, the e-Verito lacks modern gadgets that we have so become used to – steering-mounted controls, touchscreen multimedia system, climate control et al. There is also no height-adjustable driver’s seat, electrically adjustable ORVMs or even proper bottle holders in the door.

Mahindra though has retained the USP of the Verito comfortable seating for five and a large boot of 510 litres. How isn’t the boot space compromised, given that this is an electric car and the batteries are expected to be at the rear? The Li-ion battery pack is placed right where the petrol/diesel motor used to be, helping retain the boot space from the regular sedan.

Mahindra is a master of all when it comes to powering the vehicles. Though Verito is available in both diesel and petrol, but its diesel engine needs a special mention here. The 1.5-litre 4 cylinder diesel engine is pretty frugal and delivers quite an appreciable performance over city roads. It carries an ability to deliver power worth 66PS against a peak torque of 160Nm. The engine’s worth is already proved as it is a regular power source of several other cars like Renault Scala, Nissan Micra, Renault Pulse, Nissan Terrano, Fluence, and several others. Both these engines mate with a 5-speed manual transmission. All the versions of Mahindra Verito are available with BSIII and BSIV compliant versions of these power mills. The gear ratio is great that is another feather in its cap with respect to city and highway drives.

The inspiring model Renault Logan has always been known for its high mileage and the legacy is continued by Verito. The car gives similar fuel efficiency like Logan which makes it one of the most appealing sedans in C1 segment. Both petrol and diesel engine of this car have been equipped with SOHC and MPFI systems which play a great role in improving its fuel efficiency. The petrol version of Mahindra Verito delivers mileage of 11.3kmpl on city roads and 15.7kmpl over highways as rated by ARAI. The diesel engine, on the contrary, delivers a mileage of 18kmpl on city roads and 21kmpl over freeways as confirmed by ARAI. The fuel tank of Verito bears a capacity to store fuel worth 50-litres which means the diesel version of the car has a range of 1050kms while the petrol version has of 785kms.

The ride is pretty firm when compared to its competitors. But it also means the Verito can take the bad roads well. The car is sturdy and keeps the rattles and vibrations in control. The rear seat comfort is the USP among its rivals. It offers good legroom and headroom than the near competitor Dzire. The third passenger in the rear is welcome in the Verito. The cabin is pretty well silent till 100 kmph. After that the engine becomes noisy and harsh. The steering gives a positive feeling and gives great control at speeds. The typical diesel characteristics like the gear lever vibration are absent which is a good thing.

Primary safety provisions including driver side airbag and ABS with EBD are standard on the top-spec variant. Other safety equipment armed in the sedan are-adjustable head rests in front and rear, immobilizer and electrical rear window child lock. Face sports chrome finished grille and clear lens fog lamps. Mahindra Verito Conclusion

The e-Verito might just be what we need in this hour of increasing pollution and the need for clean air to breathe, and is the ideal way to avoid the odd-even rule if it crops up again. It’s also a much more realistic EV to own than its sibling, the e20, but it demands a premium for this. Mahindra says that its electric vehicles sell through word of mouth and the subsequent price reduction through the FAME scheme is also encouraging sales. However, given the infrastructure crisis right now (Mahindra claims to have identified close to 200 points across the country for setting up charging stations), it makes sense to have a hybrid rather than a pure electric. Mahesh agrees too and says that infrastructure is the main hindrance as of now. But the e-Verito wasn’t built to be a mass product. It just shows the manufacturer’s prowess at building electric vehicles and intention to further pursue this path. And that’s not something almost any of its rivals can lay claim to.
